{back to school: random needs}

College Kids are officially back at school! If you're a new freshman and you're reading this blog post… boy, am I jealous! What I wouldn't do to be back at my alma mater as a college freshman learning the in's and out's of dorm life, meeting new friends, discovering where to eat, and figuring out how to dress for classes (more on that in future posts, but I wore a uniform my whole life so figuring out a personal style was a big deal)!

Throw Pillows // Converse // Longchamp // Hunter Rainboots // Ray-Bans // Southern Tide Croakies // Rifle Paper Co. Phone Case // Rifle Paper Co. Notebooks // Kate Spade Agenda // Jonathan Adler Tray // Coordinates Collection Necklace // Shop Dandy Coffee Mug // Apple Laptop // Vera Bradley Case // PB Teen Towel Wrap

Everything on this list is what I gravitated towards during the first couple of months. They are totally random but when I sat down to make "the list" they are the first things I thought of. I didn't put pens or pencils because I only used expensive design school pens… Everyone has their preference for what the "basics" are but mine all come with a story. It'd take me 5 posts to explain exactly why the story made me choose each item as a basic so I'll save that for a long chat over cocktails ;)

Some are obvious, co-ed showers or getting ready with girls: towel wrap. Lounging around with friends: comfy throw pillows to lean on or prop yourself up. Keeping organized for classes: Laptop, laptop case (protect it! It will be your life!), notebooks, and an agenda.

Some not so obvious, Converse sneakers: I walked to class and would be back and forth all day. If I had had these during my college day I would've LIVED in them! Rainboots: yep, still walking to class. I've had my Hunter boots for 4 years and they've never sprung a leak! Side note: they look great with any school colors at a football game ;). Croakies: you WILL at some point lose your nice sunglasses… prevent it with croakies (I own 5 pairs… oops?).

Miscellaneous items:
Coordinates Collection Necklace: I've always been one to wear a simple gold necklace with everything, I normally wear this or my "karma" Dogeared necklace. This necklace was a gift to me post-college with Virginia Tech coordinates but it'd be a great way to wear a bit of your hometown at school! Longchamp purse: I was never a backpack girl. This bag was big enough to hold my laptop and textbooks but still looked cute and had a nice big strap. Phone case: because, duh. I recently saw this on instagram and then my coworker had it! It's so adorable, especially if you have the gold iPhone! Jewelry tray: a great place to throw things like that every day necklace and not have it slip in between your notebooks and pencils. Y'all this is seriously a must need for me. The number of times I would take off jewelry after a long night and have NO clue where it went the next morning. ugh! Coffee mug: one of the best parts about making your own schedule is also making "you time". Important for sanity! If you're going to have your dishes sitting out (limited space) they might as well be cheeky and cute!

 Anything else you think is a basic back to school necessity?

{night on the town}

What do you wear when you go see a Broadway show? A romantic maxi and some serious sparkle.

The ceiling in the main theater was incredible!

such fun being with my mom and my Mimi!!

Naturally, I made them pose the same way. We were laughing hysterically… everyone was staring!

Forever 21 dress, similar in floral, similar in white // Lulu*s Heels // Loren Hope Earrings //
Club Monaco Clutch, gifted, old (similar) // NARS Lipstick in "Dolce Vita"

My mom and grandmother (Mimi) were in town two weekends ago to visit for a girl's weekend. Oh did we do just that!! Three generations with DC at our fingertips? Yep, we made the most of it!

Saturday began with big hugs and sangria as we chatted in my living room. Then we got ready and made our way over to Founding Farmers Restaurant. Y'all. It is SO worth the buzz. The food was delicious! Later that night we went to the John F. Kennedy Center of Performing Arts to see The Lion King. It was just as spectacular as you can imagine! The costumes, the music, the lighting, the percussion, EVERYTHING! I could go on and on. The best part was how the opening scene, "The Circle of Life", began with these amazing animal costumes coming down the aisles. You could practically feel the energy and excitement in the room. The actors were looking right at you as they were singing and the cheetah walked right by us (by far my favorite costume). The whole setting was truly breathtaking. I could've spent hours just looking at the costumes and up at the ceiling at the beautiful crystal lights.
Sunday morning we headed towards U Street to have brunch at El Centro on 14th St. $35 for all you can EAT and drink… don't worry, I tried every tequila cocktail they served ;) and we may or may not have ordered 4 rounds of churros with chocolate sauce. A movie and nap wrapped up the rest of the afternoon. What a weekend. So lucky to have these two women in my life. Love you both!

What other Broadway shows have y'all seen and loved? Has anyone seen The Lion King?

{emmy red carpet to your closet}

While watching Bachelor in Paradise (guilty) last night you better believe I was tuning in to the Emmys. Especially for the fashion! I thought it would be fun to attempt to turn my favorite looks into looks you can wear in the real world. I noticed lots of cutouts and slits, red/coral, sleek hair, and loose fabric. Since there were big gorgeous skirt and slinky gowns these looks became inspiration for date nights or girls night out. All ultra feminine looks with flashy jewelry, sexy heels, or unexpected color!

Sarah Hyland in Christian Siriano (my favorite): BaubleBar Earrings // Nordstrom Skirt // ASOS Crop Top // Sole Society Caged Heels

Camila Alves in Zuhair Murad: SheInside Lace Dress // NARS Satin Lip Pencil in "Luxembourg" // Sole Society Tortoise Bangle Set // Schutz Rita via Piperlime

Teyonah Parris in Christian Siriano: Shop RiffRaff Scub Skirt // SheInside Cutout Top // Steve Madden Heels // Brina Box Gold Lariat Tassel Necklace

Heidi Klum in Zac Posen: Lulu*s Red Dress // Kendra Scott Glam Rocks - Steph via Nordstrom // Sam Edelman Almira Heels

Kerry Washington in Prada: Guess Sleeveless Crisscross Dress // Sole Society Statement Cuff // DV by Dolce Vita Odetta Pumps via Piperlime // H&M Textured Jacket

Which look is your favorite? Did you have a favorite red carpet look from last night?

Whenever I put this skirt on I feel like I should be working in the Mad Men era sipping a cocktail and hosting a dinner party. Okay… so maybe that's just me but I want to wear this skirt to anything and everything!

ASOS Midi Skirt // Steve Madden Heels old, identical // White Tank

I originally posted about this skirt in one of my very first blog posts! I wasn't planning on doing a blog post about it but when I wore it to work a month ago and people raved about it I kept an eye open for when it would go on sale again. Well friends… it has! From $77 to $27!

I adore this midi skirt trend. What fun! Keep your top minimal so that the focus will be on this full-bodied, patterned skirt. I chose to pair it with neutral heels so that the skirt was truly the life of the party.
Happy Monday! Time to go twirl in the middle of a street again ;)

These pants feel like I'm wearing pajamas and are incredibly comfortable. So I decided to step out of my comfort zone and pair them with something I'm not so comfortable with… crop tops.

I'm not a huge fan of tight fitting clothes because I feel self-conscious in them. I also don't like showing off my midriff. I've had a hard time with the whole "crop top trend" because I don't think it should be about showing off your whole dang belly... a sliver of skin can be just enough sexy!

So when I found these pants and they were incredibly long and I could make them high-waisted I thought "okay… let's try this out." Feeling sexy while being trendy and wearing pajama-like pants? I'll take it!

Lately I've been on a big earring kick. I have tons of beautiful big necklaces but earrings have really been getting my attention.  Pair them with a statement lip to compliment the sparkle or go nude and let the earrings shine solo!

{wardrobe transitions}

SPRING: Skirt // Shoes // Shirt // Necklace // Purse // Lips "Chunky Cherry" // Sunglasses

FALL: Skirt // Rings // Earrings // Lips "Tolede" // Necklace //  // Hat // Sweater // Flats // Purse

WINTER: Skirt // Shoes // Pendant Necklace // Long Necklace // Lips "Cockney" // Tights // Sweater // Clutch // Ring

I always joke that my go-to outfit is navy and white. So today, I thought I would show you how I plan on wearing that color combo through Spring, Fall, and Winter. It's always about the accessories in my book! I also thought it would be fun to pick one item (everyone raves about this skirt) and style it through all three seasons. It's important to be able to style one piece multiple ways so you can get more use out of it. Especially during the end of the year because the weather gets so iffy! One second it's warm and sunny… the next it's a polar vortex!! Ugh, fingers crossed this winter doesn't go like that this year. I'll list my fall essentials later on, but for now, let's enjoy the last bit of summer! Time to get as much sunshine as I can out of August :)

Love Always,

PS. how would you style this navy skirt? Any ideas? I'd love to hear them!
